Two cool and quirky London wedding venues – the Asylum Chapel and (One) Friendly Place wedding photography

Esther + Martin

This is a killer combo in terms of the level of cool and quirky. Industrial vibes from Friendly Place plus an abundance of props and cool decor and the decaying beauty of Asylum Chapel with stained-glass windows and crumbling walls. Perfect for a modern and relaxed wedding of couples with a unique sense of style and aesthetics. I love both venues, and it was a true privilege to be invited by Martin and Esther to be their Asylum and Friendly Place wedding photographers.

I am convinced that I get to work with the best couples! Here is what they said about their preview wedding photographs from Asylum Chapel and Friendly Place:

”We cannot thank you enough for these gorgeous, love and fun-filled photographs. You have captured the spirit of our day beautifully, we are overjoyed, I can’t stop looking at them! Equally importantly, thanks to both you and Aggie for being so brilliant on the day. It was wonderful to have you with us, and you managed the tight timescales and the party atmosphere brilliantly!”

Wedding outfits

Esther got ready in Friendly Place (although everybody calls it One Friendly Place per their address!) with her bride’s squad and family. She rocked a natural look with bold lips (thanks to Zoe from Knot your average bride) and wore a stunning two-piece outfit with a skirt with pockets from Halfpenny and a lace top and a cape from Julita London Bride.  And then there are the shoes! OMG, I wish I wore high heels -these gold Oscar Tiye stilettos were insane!

Martin looked uber dapper in three-piece blue tweed suit from The Drop and a burgundy tie with a bird motif – birds and stars appeared on Esther’s cape and hair pins too. The groomsmen wore similar ties by The Tie Garden. There was a subtle theme of burgundy tones showing in stunning flower arrangements by Flower & Press, mismatched bridesmaids’ dresses, gorgeous handmade by Esther’s aunt flower girls’ dresses and groomsmen’s accessories.

Wedding day and styling

The boys got ready in Double Tree Hilton Hotel where they met the rest of the guests before jumping on London Retro Bus to the Asylum Chapel for the ceremony. Despite the wet day and gloomy skies, nothing dampened the mood of the party – a blue sequin whisky flask travelled around the bus to help with that too! After a beautiful ceremony at the magical Asylum Chapel the guests stayed for a gin & tonic and cheese feast while we took some family and couple photos.

One more bus journey and we continued the rest of the wedding day in a quirky and cool Friendly Place, South London wedding venue. Set up on 3 levels, this venue offers a unique backdrop to your wedding. Vintage toys and garden games, distressed sofas, theatre props and that red rose neon sign! Friendly Place is definitely a perfect location for cool wedding photography in South London.

Esther and Martin opted for standing speeches before the meal was served downstairs. Bare wooden long tables, simple floral arrangements, Polaroids as seating cards, fairy and festoon lights – fantastic ideas by the couple with the help of family and friends. Oh, I should not forget to add that the cake was made by Martin’s Mother and the table plan by Martin’s Aunt.

Music

Live music entertained the guests throughout the day – first -a string duo Blue Topaz Strings in the Asylum Chapel and then Esther’s brother and his brass quartet rocked the reception floor. In the evening Paddy took over the decks, and guests put on funky glasses that turned lights into hearts and danced until late!

Wedding Coordination

The day would not run smoothly without the amazing help and fantastic coordinating skills of Devine Bride! I had the pleasure of working with Laura before and always happily recommend her services to couples who do not necessarily need full-service planning. Having someone to overlook suppliers in case of dry hire venues, and making sure that everything runs smoothly and on time, is priceless. It is helping couples to feel more relaxed and enjoy their day, and all suppliers to have a point of contact that is available.
